San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library

The San Francisco History Center contains a research collection of books, newspapers and magazines, photographs, maps, posters, archives and manuscript collections, and ephemera, documenting all aspects of San Francisco life and history. The Center is also the archives for the City and County of San Francisco.

The San Francisco History Center contains a wealth of primary and secondary source materials in print, manuscript, audio-visual, and digital formats. These include books, periodicals, pamphlets, ephemera; newspapers and news clippings; maps; photographs and slides; microfilm and fiche, videos, DVDs, and recordings; posters and broadsides; archives and manuscripts, scrapbooks, oral histories; realia.

The book collection comprises more than 20,000 volumes, ranging from biography to county history to social history, and covering such varied subjects as: art and architecture; transportation; earthquakes; labor unions; music and theatre; travel; public health; religion; government; education. In addition, a collection of novels set in San Francisco numbers in the hundreds.

Besides holding 900 distinct periodical titles, some dating back to the 1850s, the Center maintains 19 active periodical subscriptions relating to San Francisco and California history.
